Starting April 1, the prices of over 900 essential medicines have increased by up to 1.74%, as approved by the National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA). The price hike is based on the 2024 rise in the Wholesale Price Index.
The revision impacts various drugs, including those used for treating infections, heart disease, diabetes, and pain. Medicines like Azithromycin, Ibuprofen, and several diabetes combinations will now be more expensive. This adjustment follows the Drugs (Prices Control) Order, 2013, which permits annual price revisions linked to inflation. The increase aims to strike a balance between maintaining affordability and adjusting for inflation-driven production costs.
