The Lokmanya Tilak Express which was traveling from Chennai to Mumbai had to be halted soon after it started as the engine coach caught fire. Rail passengers feared the smoke and the fire and soon started feeling the spot. The LTT Express (Train No. 12164) which started from Dr. MGR Chennai Central was halted 30 minutes after it started the journey at Vyasarpadi station after a fire broke out.

Video captured by the eyewitnesses shows huge smoke coming out of the coach and sharp flashes of fire from under the train. The short circuit of the electric coupler between the power car and the locomotive resulted in a huge block of smoke and sparks.

Southern Railways, however, denied any fire reported in the accident and said that the issue was addressed. The Loco Pilot reacted quickly and halted the train immediately near the Basin Bridge. Shortly after, the train resumed its journey.
