Hyderabad: India reported five cases of Human Metapneumovirus (hMPV), with two cases each in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka and one in Gujarat. Union Health Minister JP Nadda stated that the Joint Monitoring Group has convened to discuss the issue, and surveillance measures have been strengthened.

The hMPV virus, which primarily affects children, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immunity, has raised concerns amidst a winter surge in respiratory illnesses globally. Virologist Dr. Kang reassured the public, highlighting that hMPV is not a new virus and there is no cause for alarm.

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah echoed this sentiment, stating, “The virus is not dangerous, but taking precautions is advisable.” He urged citizens to follow health guidelines and remain vigilant.

Meanwhile, the World Health Organization (WHO) clarified that the rise in respiratory illnesses across the Northern Hemisphere, including hMPV cases in China, is typical for the winter season. WHO officials confirmed there are no unusual outbreak patterns or overwhelmed health systems in China, dispelling fears of a COVID-19-like situation.

Indian authorities remain in close contact with international agencies, including the WHO, to monitor the situation and implement necessary health measures.
