Known as the architect of India’s economic reforms, Manmohan Singh’s tenure as Finance Minister in the 1990s transformed the country into a global economic force.

Born on September 26, 1932, in Gah, now in Pakistan, Manmohan Singh survived the violent Partition of India in 1947 and rose to prominence through his intellectual brilliance. An Oxford-educated economist, his 1991 budget dismantled the socialist framework, ended the Permit Raj, and ushered in globalization.

Manmohan Singh served as Prime Minister from 2004 to 2014, navigating India through crises, including the 2008 global financial meltdown. His tenure strengthened India’s ties with the U.S. and saw the landmark nuclear agreement. Despite facing criticism for perceived political weaknesses and corruption scandals during his second term, Manmohan Singh’s humility and integrity earned him widespread respect.

Current PM Narendra Modi called him “one of India’s most distinguished leaders,” mourning his demise on social media.
