Mulugu: A 5.3-magnitude earthquake struck Telangana’s Mulugu district this morning, sending tremors across Hyderabad and parts of Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra. The quake occurred at 7:27 am, as confirmed by the National Center for Seismology (NCS).
The NCS reported, “EQ of M: 5.3, On: 04/12/2024 07:27:02 IST, Lat: 18.44 N, Long: 80.24 E, Depth: 40 Km, Location: Mulugu, Telangana.” Telangana, categorized under Seismic Zone II—one of India’s low-intensity zones—rarely experiences seismic activity, making this event significant.

Residents in Mulugu and Hyderabad experienced strong tremors, prompting panic. Fortunately, no casualties or significant damage were reported. Officials are assessing the situation and have advised residents to remain vigilant and avoid unsafe structures.
The quake’s impact extended to Maharashtra, where light tremors were felt in Nagpur, Gadchiroli, and Chandrapur districts. Chandrapur Collector Vinay Gowda reassured citizens, advising them to remain calm and move to open spaces during aftershocks.
An X user, Telangana Weatherman, remarked, “For the first time in 20 years, a 5.3 magnitude earthquake struck Telangana, with Mulugu as the epicenter.”
India is divided into four seismic zones, with 59% of the landmass prone to varying earthquake intensities. Telangana, grouped in Zone II, rarely witnesses such events.
